It is the policy of Syracuse University to comply with the regulations of New York State, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that pertain to asbestos in the work place and environment. All contracted and in-house asbestos work (i.e. removal, disposal, laboratory analysis, contractor selection) will be approved and supervised by the University’s Physical Plant Environmental Shop. All work activities involving the management of asbestos at the University must adhere to the guidelines set forth in the University’s Asbestos Management Program and all applicable rules and regulations. The Environmental Health Office (EHO) will maintain applicable asbestos licenses and permits for asbestos abatement work at the University and will provide Asbestos Awareness and Asbestos Hazard Communication Training to University employees. The Physical Plant Environmental Shop supervisor is responsible for the general operation of the University’s Asbestos Management Program including, but not limited to, identifying and labeling asbestos containing material, tracking the locations of identified asbestos containing material on University owned or operated property and maintenance of related documentation, abatement project monitoring and notifications, waste disposal, etc. It is the responsibility of the contracting department to disclose to contractors the presence of known asbestos containing materials in areas where the contract work will be performed. Any known or suspected disturbance of asbestos must be reported to the EHO immediately.
