Policy Statement

The use and handling of pesticides at the University will be by certified pesticide applicators or technicians only. All pesticide applicators are required to understand basic safety and handling rules for pesticide use and comply with applicable regulations and University program requirements. All University pesticide use must conform with the guidelines set forth in the Pesticide Program User’s Manual, NYS DEC’s Pesticide Application Regulations, and must incorporate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.

The Environmental Health Office (EHO) oversees pesticide-related compliance activities including reporting and notification requirements, and maintains copies of pesticide product labels and Material Safety Data Sheets for those pesticides used at the University. Each University certified pesticide applicator will be required to maintain his/her own pesticide use records on the forms provided, keep accurate recertification credit records and comply with University notification requirements.

Pesticide applicators, including outside contractors applying pesticides on University owned or operated properties, must notify EHO in advance, unless performed in an emergency, of each pesticide application made, including the location and date of the pesticide application, the name of the pesticide applied, the pesticide’s EPA registration number and the amount applied.

Seventy-two (72) hour advanced notice must be provided to EHO prior to any pesticide application made at the University’s child care facilities or within 150 feet of child care facilities to ensure compliance with parental notification requirements.
