Policy Statement
Syracuse University offers Adoption Assistance Reimbursement Grants to cover eligible expenses up to $5,000 for the adoption of one child, or $8,000 for the simultaneous adoption of more than one child. Children must be under 18 years of age and not biologically related to either parent. Eligible expenses may include agency fees, legal fees, medical expenses for the birth mother and child, temporary foster care, and transportation and lodging. Other expenses may be eligible at the sole discretion of the Office of Human Resources. An adoption decree from a United States court is required and must be submitted along with itemized expense receipts and the Adoption Assistance Reimbursement Form. Requests for benefits must be made no later than 12 months from the date of the final adoption decree. Employees who terminate employment may request benefits within 30 days of termination of employment. Reimbursements are treated as taxable income and employees are responsible for any additional tax implications relative to their own circumstances.
